David Rettig, Owner and Founder

David was born and raised in the rural Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where he developed an affinity for the outdoors and patterns of wild nature. After studying poetry, he followed his passion for horticulture to Michigan State University and received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Horticulture with majors in Landscape Design, Construction and Management, and Sustainable and Organic Horticulture.

David was the Lead Horticulturist for The Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese Garden at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park for six years. He worked alongside the designer and craftsmen from Japan while building the garden. He has studied gardening in Japan and across the United States.

Prior to his role at Meijer Gardens, he worked in all aspects of horticulture, from landscape installation to nursery management. His favorite place to be is pruning in the garden; the most honest intersection of the artistry of man and the beauty of nature.

David has taught multiple classes, published, and made media appearances to promote the healing and artistry that awaits everyone in the garden.
